The following is a list of Microsoft Office filename extensions, used in Microsoft Office software suite as of January 2017. Word Legacy Legacy filename extensions denote binary Microsoft Word formatting that became outdated with the release of Microsoft Office 2007.Although the latest version of Microsoft Word can still open them, they are no longer developed. Office 365 is a subscription-based program. However, there is a free browser-based version that not only gives you free access to Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Access, and Publisher but you'll also get 5GB of free storage on the cloud-based OneDrive storage. Can I just buy one of the Office 365 apps? Open one word document, click Help tab and from the drop-down menu you can see obviously About Microsoft Office Word item. Click the About Microsoft Office Word, a new window appears. See the screen shot below, here you can view the version infomation underlined in red of your Microsoft Office 2003.
Opt in to getting the latest builds
To opt in to getting the latest builds of Office:
- If you're a Microsoft 365 Family, Personal, or University subscriber, see Be an Office Insider.
- If you're a Microsoft 365 Apps for business customer, see Install the First Release build for Microsoft 365 Apps for business customers.
- If you're running Office on a Mac:
- Start an Office application.
- Select Check for Updates on the Help menu.
- In the Microsoft AutoUpdate box, check the box to join the Office Insider program.
Get the latest build
To get the latest build of Office:
- Download the Office Deployment Tool.
- Run the tool. This extracts the following two files: Setup.exe and configuration.xml.
- Replace the configuration.xml file with the First Release Configuration File.
- Run the following command as an administrator:
setup.exe /configure configuration.xml

The command might take a long time to run without indicating progress.
Microsoft Word Current Version
When the installation process finishes, you will have the latest Office applications installed. To verify that you have the latest build, go to File > Account from any Office application. Under Office Updates, you'll see the (Office Insiders) label above the version number.

Generally, customers who purchase or license Word 2007 from Microsoft after January 10, 2010 for use in the United States and its territories must use updated software that does not include a particular custom XML tagging implementation.
